Just South of Colinda Cabanas is a large Ospreys nest on a hydro pole beside the airport that offers some excellent viewing and photo oportunities. Beyond the airport is a littoral forest trail which circumnavigates the island. Birders can often spot Frigate birds, gull-billed, sandwich and royal terns, Roseate Spoonbills, Green-breasted mangos, Cinnamon hummingbirds, Peregrine falcons, Mangrove warblers, Caribbean elaenia, Yucatan vireo, Black catbird and white-crowned pigeons.
Often there are schools of fish under Colinda Cabanas pier which attract Ospreys and Pelicans. Watching the Pelicans dive into the water can be very entertaining ! Did you know that after a Osprey catches a fish he will manoever and turn the fish around so that the Fish faces forward when the Osprey is flying through the air ?
